Following several months of publicity around State Sen. Scott Jensen’s (R-Chaska) stance on Minnesota’s COVID-19 response, the family physician is back in the spotlight. Jensen, who isn’t running for re-election, said in a video he is being investigated by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice for allegations of “spreading misinformation” regarding comments on COVID-19 death certificates on a news program in April, and providing “reckless advice” comparing COVID-19 and the flu.

When Myrtle Klemp was 12 years old, her little brother broke his arm, prompting a visit from a physician to their farm. “The doctor came out to the country to pick him up,” she says. “He wondered why I wasn’t in school.”Well, back in 1927, it wasn’t really an option for the family, who lived between Corcoran and Rogers. The nearest high school wasn’t easy to get to. No buses came out that far, so Klemp passed a state exam absolving her from attending school. That didn’t last long.

It’s been about two weeks since Minnesota’s Tobacco 21 law went into effect on Aug. 1. So far, things are going as planned, according to county health officials and sheriffs. It followed a December federal law changing the legal tobacco purchasing age from 18 to 21. Minnesota tobacco and health experts say it’s a big step in clarifying the national law, which was confusing to some states, counties and cities that hadn’t bumped up the purchase age.

It’s not hard for Lindsey Steele to get her two sons interested in books. Add running and jumping to the reading session, and the Chaska family is sold. Steele and the boys, 2- and 5-year-old Rowan and Porter, followed white foam core signs around Firemen’s Park last Thursday, romping to and fro in the grassy area. The family was among several that morning to check out the Carver County Library’s StoryWalk, a collection of children’s books viewable from the great outdoors.

A dozen or so lawn chairs are scattered throughout rural Henderson on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Every once in a while, a faint cheer or small round of applause will arise from a curb down the small town street. “At almost every corner, you had someone sitting on a lawn chair saying, ‘Go! Go! You’re doing great!’” said John Jarvis, from Eden Prairie. He was one of 200-some bicyclists riding in the Day Across Minnesota, or DAMn, race on Saturday. It wasn’t your average race. The start time? Midnight.
