NEW DELHI — Multiple landslides triggered by torrential rains in southern India have killed 49 people, and many others are feared trapped under the debris, officials said Tuesday, with rescue operations being hampered by bad weather.
The landslides hit hilly villages in Kerala state’s Wayanad district early Tuesday and destroyed many houses and a bridge, but authorities have yet to determine the full scope of the disaster.

In 2013, Rasha Kowalewski’s mother, Cheryl Suzanne Stephens, was diagnosed with kidney cancer. By 2016, the cancer had spread to Stephens’ lungs and she was admitted to the hospital.
Kowalewski was scared and in disbelief. As far back as she could remember, their relationship had been close.

Arizona’s status as a swing state was cemented the last two election cycles when President Biden won here in 2020 and Democrats swept key statewide races, including a U.S. Senate seat, in 2022.
But Democrats’ share of the electorate is down under Biden — Republicans now hold a nearly 260,000-person advantage among registered voters in Arizona, and hope to use that advantage to reclaim the state for former President Donald Trump, who lost by less than 11,000 votes four years ago.
