The Madleen ship was launched by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and initially planned to sail from Malta last month, but the group’s ship was damaged in a drone attack. On May 3, 2024, Roger Fortson was on a video call with his girlfriend when a knock came at his door. Fortson, a 23-year-old Black man, was a senior airman in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Florida. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Eddie Duran had responded to a domestic disturbance call at the apartment complex in Fort Walton Beach. Building staff directed him to Fortson’s unit. After the deputy pounded on the door, Fortson opened it, holding his left hand up, palm out, posing no threat.

Since his 2015 embrace of electoral politics, though, his lifelong craving for headlines has been at odds with adversarial journalism that holds him to account. Thus, he attacks the press as the “enemy of the people,” insults journalists and even incites violence against them.
