On May 3, 2024, Roger Fortson was on a video call with his girlfriend when a knock came at his door. Fortson, a 23-year-old Black man, was a Senior Airman in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Florida. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Eddie Duran had responded to a domestic disturbance call at the apartment complex. Building staff directed him to Fortson’s unit. After the deputy pounded on the door, Fortson opened it, holding his left hand up, palm out, posing no threat.
