    CNN  —  Thousands of artists are being featured at hundreds of galleries as Art Basel opens its doors in the Swiss city this week. But before visitors even enter the art fair, they will cross a large public square sprayed with white and magenta paint — an artwork by Katharina Grosse. The German artist is known for using spray paint to transform spaces, from an abandoned property in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans to a condemned structure in the Rockaways, New York.

For celebrated young South Korean artist Moka Lee, it’s the main source of inspiration for her portrait paintings, which have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. “I can observe countless people with just my phone without meeting them,” Lee tells CNN. “I wait to find something unique in the pictures that I come across by chance through the algorithm,” she adds.

    Hong Kong CNN  —  The neon signs that once illuminated Hong Kong have mostly gone dark. The lights were once synonymous with the city, but in recent years, the government has tightened regulations over safety concerns about unwieldy signs, and many have been removed. But inside a workspace in the Wong Chuk Hang neighborhood, neon lights are shining bright. Jive Lau founded the Kowloneon studio in 2021, with the hopes of preserving the craft of neon making.
