    When we think of school, we often think of learning in the classroom, but providing a well-rounded education and really preparing students for life beyond high school involves much more than the classroom experiences. Grades and test scores don’t motivate most children, activities, social experiences, feeling good about oneself, these are things that help motivate students to do well. One key area that helps with this is athletics.

    I have been asked may times in recent weeks about the unfunded mandates that I mentioned in the column on Dec. 22, 2023. While most of these regulations are well-meaning they all have costs associated with them, even when they are not financial in nature. Frequently the state places these regulations on the schools without providing the funding to fully cover even the most basic upfront costs required to meet the implemented regulation.

    In today’s schools, besides learning reading, writing, and math, we aim to provide students with a well-rounded education. We focus on the basics, but it's applying these skills to tough tasks that help students succeed. Other important skills for jobs, known as “soft skills,” are often learned in non-academic parts of school. These activities also make students want to come to school and feel proud as they share their work outside class.

    I was asked one time, “The state says they fully fund education. Are they lying?” My answer was “yes.” Of course, it is more complicated than that. In simple terms the state fully funds a model they created in 2010 for education funding called the Prototypical School Model.
