I first met Dimitri Komninos many years ago when I was consulting with chefs and restaurants. One of my clients swore by Dimitri’s Olive Oil and as an avid home cook and I was, of course, intrigued. I tried it, loved it and started buying it at the farmers market. Besides the excellent quality and varieties to choose from, I also was happy that it was from a local family business and I would see Dimitri at his farmers market stand on many weekends.

Dave Sherman is one of the most positive-minded people I know. He sees the good. And not in a rose-colored glasses way, in a real way that makes you understand how he got to that feeling of goodness. He thinks way beyond himself and he helps other people see the good in the world, too. I love that about him. Because this is Baltimore, I knew two of Dave’s brothers before I met him at Cafe Cito back in the day.

It’s hard for me to remember meeting Sam Classen. She’s one of those people you just feel that you have known forever. I know that sounds cliche but really, it’s true. She’s kind, sends the best texts and she always keeps her promises. Sam owns Golden West Cafe, a Hampden neighborhood institution. One thing I really love about Golden West is that it’s different from anything else, it has its own vibe from the decor to the food to the people.

If you love wine and La Cuchara restaurant, then you likely know Mike “Red” Farace. The red hair, the beard, always looking dapper, Red is one of the many reasons I love to sit at the bar at La Cuchara. It’s a great solo spot for me, whether it’s a quick drink and snack (see: BREAD SERVICE!) or dinner. FYI: They update the menu on their website everyday, so you can see what’s on for that night. If I see dayboat scallops on the menu and do not go, there has to be a very, very good reason.

I haven’t known Lauren and Ron Barnette of Amicci’s of Little Italy for long, but as soon as I met them, I knew they were my kind of people. They are incredibly kind and down to earth and they love taking care of people. True natural hospitality. I first met Lauren through a mutual friend, Naomi Karzai and anyone who’s friends with Naomi is good with me. Good people are such a treasure, no?

Years ago, in the land before social media (gasp!) there was a small group of women who either owned and ran a local food business here in Baltimore. This was about 2012 or 2013 and I think the group was called Á La Carte. The group would meet monthly to share opportunities, challenges and experiences. Michele Tsucalas was in that group, as was I, since that was when I started my small baking business. I treasured those meetups as did we all, I think.

Before I tell you about Brian Lavin and Sam White, I have a question. Did you ever go to Gnocco in Highlandtown during their three-year run a few years back? If you did, you probably remember being wowed by the food and drinks and the warm, intimate feel. I was very sad when it closed, so when I heard that owners Brian Lavin and Sam White were opening up a new spot, Costiera, I was ridiculously excited. I knew it would be good. And it is – very, very good.

Chef John Bedingfield of The Food Market restaurant group is quiet, focused and driven. I’ve known him since about 2015 when I started consulting with Chef Chad Gauss on social media and marketing. Chad and I met via Instagram and I think our first time we met in person was to make a trade for salted caramel brownies for fresh soft crabs. That was a really good trade.

They were incredibly gracious and made so many things for me to shoot and taste and I was smitten. That was 2015 and HERE is that piece.
