One startup came up with a way to solve this: removing the beans from coffee.

We are starting to see sustainability startups soar in terms of funding, and green businesses seem to have started to receive financial the backing they deserve.

As of April 2022, there were around 78 million vegans worldwide. In 2023, we know that 16% of US millennials went vegan at some point, and the number of vegans in the UK increased by 400% between 2006 and 2018. In Germany, as of 2022, 3.1% of people were vegan, and 6.9% vegetarian, as opposed to the 2% of vegan and 4.9% of vegetarian Germans of 2021. In short, veganism is trending. A vegan diet boasts numerous health and environmental benefits.

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are the of climate change. Transportation emissions account for a of global GHG emissions, and for 29% of total US GHG emissions, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finds. During COVID19, we saw global GHG emissions temporarily drop massively. One Canadian study found that surface transport emissions had dropped by 36% by April 2020, and showed that commute-related GHG emissions in 2020 to McGill University declined significantly.

Plastic pollution has a huge impact on our oceans, as well as on our society and health. With around 14 million tonnes of plastic winding up in oceans every year, plastic now accounts for 80% of all marine pollution. “Plastics make up roughly half of each person’s contribution to ocean pollution. Fertilisers, manures and untreated sewage pollute the ocean at a rate of 1.4 kg per person per year.
