Swiss architecture studio Itten+Brechbühl has created a temporary timber university sports hall in Zurich, with aspirations for its demountable construction to be “the new standard in architecture”. Shortlisted in the sustainable building category of Dezeen Awards 2024, Sporthallenprovisorium Gloriarank replaces four sports halls at the University of Zurich with its glued laminated timber (glulam) structure clad in larch timber.

This week on Dezeen, Japanese studio Kengo Kuma and Associates completed a Parisian interchange station wrapped in vertical wooden louvres. Built as part of the Grand Paris Express transport system, Saint-Denis Pleyel Station has an angular form made up of wedge-shaped tiers wrapped in external ramps. It acts as an interchange between four metro lines and connects with an existing urban bridge, providing access to the existing RER D transport lines.

A curved roof and textured concrete walls characterise Northcote House in Melbourne, designed by local studio LLDS Architects for its founder partners. Slotted into the site of a former car park measuring 4.6 metres in width and 22 metres in length, the project by LLDS Architects aims to showcase how narrow urban plots can be developed into compact houses.

Japanese architecture studio Kengo Kuma & Associates has completed Yama-Tani, a wooden residential building in Paris with a sculptural facade designed to “liven up the street”. Yama-Tani, which means Mountain Valley in Japanese, features pleats of chestnut wood cascading down its street-facing facade at jaunty angles to make patterns of light and shadow.

A large wooden roof with a decorative structure depicting the emblem of the city Toyota tops this museum in Japan, completed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Named Toyota City Museum, the building sits alongside the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, which was completed by Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi in 1995. Its structure is built largely from local cedar, including its distinctive 90-metre-long roof that is perched on tall tapered columns.

Researcher Tavs Jorgensen has created a method of extruding cob into brick shapes, in an effort to make the low-carbon biomaterial more accessible. Used to create bricks that can be stacked in interlocking patterns, the process involves pushing different samples of cob – a construction material made from earth and straw – through 3D-printed extrusion moulds known as dies.
