VINTON — Several Virginia Gay Hospitals and Clinics nurses were nominated again this year for a DAISY Award. A total of eight nurses were nominated, and one of those nominees, Katie Steele, RN, BSN, was chosen as a recipient. The other 2025 VGH Daisy Nominees included: Amy Olson, RN, BSN; Reanna Wilhelm, RN, BSN; Cassie Patava, RN; Trisha Wiese, RN; Joy Nachtman, CMA; Julia Laughridge, RN, BSN; and Brandi Bresson, RN, BSN.

VINTON — The volunteers at Benton County Food Pantry in Vinton have had a busy week unloading and organizing over 2,000 pounds of recently donated non-perishable food items. The biggest chunk came from the second and third grade classes at Tilford Elementary, who together collected 1,697 food items, which weighed in at 1,845 pounds. The two grades had a competition to see who could bring the most non-perishable food items to donate to the pantry.

SHELLSBURG — Students at Shellsburg Elementary learned all about the swing in Jazz on Wednesday, May 7, from the local jazz musicians group, Schoolhouse Jazz. Eric Tabaka, who serves as Vocal Music Teacher at VSMS and K-5 General Music Teacher at Shellsburg Elementary said that “Schoolhouse Jazz is a group of local musicians that travel to schools to put on educational programs for students.”The group was formed through KCCK, the only jazz radio station in Iowa.

VAN HORNE — An incident occurred at the Benton Community High School on Tuesday that resulted in students and staff being locked down in their classrooms for a few hours. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement on Wednesday afternoon about the incident. “On May 6, 2025 around 12:30 p.m., a report was received of a violent threat towards Benton Community High School that was sent through a Safe + Sound tip line.
