Photo / Alex RobertsonSearchers are still looking for a person swept off the rocks at Piha yesterday afternoon. Police yesterday said they were called to assist their “emergency rescue colleagues” at 2.37pm after a person fell off the rocks at the Blue Pool at the south of the beach. The search resumed at first light this morning and remains ongoing, police said.

The implementation of a controversial new science curriculum that caused outrage for its lack of any mention of physics, chemistry or biology has come to a halt - both delighting and frustrating educators. Consultation on the draft new science curriculum, which caused uproar when an early version was leaked, has been put on hold for a second time, with the Ministry of Education waiting to “engage” with the new Government before it is sent out.

The Electoral Commission is defending its decision to use Manurewa Marae as a polling booth saying it sought assurances the area’s candidate would not be involved and made sure the marae understood the rules around offering food. The Electoral Commission has come under intense scrutiny over its decision to set up a polling booth at the marae where Te Pāti Māori candidate Takutai Moana Kemp is the chief executive.

More than half of students were not regularly attending school in term 2 of this year, data released this afternoon shows. The Ministry of Education said 47 per cent of students met the criteria for regular attendance during the term, up 7.2 per cent from the same time last year when attendance rates hit a record low of 39.8 per cent. But it was markedly lower than term one of this year when the regular attendance rate was 59.5 per cent.
