When tech billionaires and crypto moguls hailed Donald Trump’s reelection and flocked to his inauguration ceremony and ball, million-dollar donations in hand, some were abandoning previous liberal affiliations and all were now lining up behind an openly authoritarian president. The surface rationale is that megabusiness leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, and Marc Andreessen are safeguarding their companies and their shareholders’ interests.

Dissent is deadly in a totalitarian country. Vladimir Putin promised a lightning war — but almost three years after his invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s military is bleeding. The number of casualties, alone, is shocking. Even Trump has remarked on the consequences of Putin “grinding it out”. Since February 2022, Moscow has suffered some 700,000 casualties, including around 100,000 dead.

Until recently, the Biden administration has publicly insisted that it is conducting vigorous diplomacy to end Israel’s war in Gaza. That war has made Gaza unlivable and likely resulted in well over 100,000 deaths. Health care and aid workers have been killed in staggering numbers, and Gaza has been designated the most dangerous place on Earth to be a child.

“America’s tech oligarchs may discover sooner rather than later that, by undermining democratic governance, they are empowering an authoritarian president who can pick them off one by one—just as Putin did,” writes @AEdelWriter: https://t.co/v3IvjY3Hhq
