This song jumped out to me about a week ago. And, for lots of reasons, I think it’s the right one to go with for this entry. First of all, it’s fun and upbeat – and we can probably all use lots of that about now. Second, I’ve always liked the brashness of this song – it’s from the band, The Presidents of the United States of America, debut album in 1995.

First things First Hurricane Helene has brought widespread destruction and suffering to so many people in the Southeast. Individuals’ lives and their communities had been devastated in ways great and small and for many these impacts will last far into the future. As someone who is not there, I cannot imagine what life is like there now. All I can do is offer my greatest sympathy and wishes for recovery and moving forward.

This past week I passed the halfway point on the Appalachian Trail! This sounds like a good time, and hopefully something that might be helpful, to check in on the gear!Overall I would say that things have gone well gearwise.

There were many, many choices for this one, obviously! Here’s some of the possible intro songs that jumped out from my musical mind.

Wow – The Muppet Movie, from which the intro song comes from, came out in 1979! That’s a long while ago. And, I think it is the perfect song to start this entry – the first entry of the second half of this amazing adventure on the Appalachian Trail! My wife Laura introduced me to this movie and the Muppets when we were teens.

I’ve met several hikers on the AT from Philadelphia and they’re often surprised that Philly is one of my favorite places. Eventually, I ask them their thoughts on one of my favorite shows, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Let’s have Charlie, one of the main characters from It’s Always Sunny, give us a bit of a geography lesson about Pennsylvania to start this entry – my second from the Keystone State.

I spent a while thinking about how to start my first post heading into Pennsylvania. Something I am so excited about, as in many ways, this is the first new trail I have hiked in this 900 hundred mile journey. Yes, I have never backpacked the AT in New Hampshire or Maine, but as a New Englander, I have been in those states so many times. Hiking south on the AT, into Pennsylvania, and points south towards Georgie was clearly new and big time.

Okay, it may be hard to square a ‘perfect nero day’ and ‘hard luck and circumstances’. But give me a few minutes and see if I can pull it off. Charlie Crockett is a great newer musician. I only came across him a couple of years ago but he has been putting out music since 2015. He’s a great combination of blues, pop, folk, country, Americana, all with a deep, twangy, bass voice.

Okay, I’m not southbound ‘again’ I’m southbound for the first time – but it’s a great song by the band Dire Straits. So yes, I’m now heading south to Georgia and the southern terminus, Springer Mountain! But that is more than 1300 miles away so I’ll be focusing on some shorter-term goals.

Winterlude is a great Bob Dylan song from the underappreciated 1970 album, New Morning. And, if I remember correctly, this album is one that my sister Lucie gifted our family along with a turntable (our first) back in the 1970s! While Bob Dylan sings in this song about an interlude in the winter, I am ‘appropriating’ this fun song for my interlude between my northern and southern treks on the Appalachian Trail.
