Facing a massive shortage of workers in the healthcare sector, Canada's French-speaking province of Quebec has launched a major recruitment drive in Africa. The goal is to attract 1,000 Francophone nurses in the space of two years. With this $65 million programme, the provincial government hopes it will help reverse the decline of the French language and encourage young families to settle in Quebec's regions with older populations. Candidates in Gabon have until Sunday 16th July to submit their candidature files for the general elections. Latecomers have been given a further 5 days to complete their applications. For the presidential elections alone, some fifteen candidates are in the starting-block. Ali Bongo Ondimba has been in power for 14 years and is standing for re-election for a third term. Facing the outgoing head of state will be both an opposition seeking unity and a presidential majority lacking cohesion.
