In one of his “Notes on Militant Poetics” (2012–13), the British poet Sean Bonney comments on the transformation of Satan and the devils into snakes in book ten of Paradise Lost. Satan has just returned from Eden, and is bragging about his successful temptation of Eve and Adam. He expects to hear a “universal shout and high applause” (X.505), but the angels have been turned into serpents and can only hiss.

There was a crunch of gravel and then the snap of our letter box opening. A small package landed on our door mat, the front inscribed with the neat cursive hand of my 26-year-old daughter, Jess. The card inside featured a rainbow with the words 'just to send you a little smile'. The carefully padded envelope also contained a brooch, made by Jess' friend, to raise funds for our health service. Jess was a fan of the NHS rainbows and all they represented during the Covid pandemic.

The name given to Phillis Wheatley by her family is lost. She may have been born in modern-day Senegal or Gambia, and was called ‘Phillis’ after the ship in which she was forcibly transported to Boston in 1761.

Alice Notley was born in Arizona in 1945, and grew up in Needles, California. One of her first jobs was transcribing broadcasts for Radio Free Europe: the work influenced her early poems, which incorporate verbatim phrases from the street and the news – a literalisation of John Stuart Mill’s claim that poetry is eloquence overheard. Transcription was a pragmatic technique, and a modest one. ‘I was in a state of fascination with the voices of others,’ Notley recalls.
