GIBSONTON, Fla. — Lightning struck a Hillsborough County home, starting a fire in the attic as storms rolled through Friday evening. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews responded just before 5 p.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting smoke and flames coming from the roof of a two-story home on Northern Lights Drive in Gibsonton. The first engine arrived within minutes to find heavy fire venting through the roof. Firefighters entered the home, deployed hose lines and began attacking the blaze.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays are asking fans to "take cover" from thunderstorms before Friday night's game against Detroit. At 5:35 p.m., the team said that although the gates are open at Steinbrenner Field, the shelter advisory is still active. "Fans should stay in their vehicles or take cover to the shelter areas," the Rays wrote.

SARASOTA, Fla. — Environmental officials jumped into action Thursday to contain a 54,000-gallon sewage spill in a Sarasota neighborhood. Sarasota County Public Utilities staff received a call around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, notifying them of a spill on Vivienda Way in The Meadows. Officials were on site within 10 minutes and began diverting the flow of the air release valve by shutting off multiple lift stations.
