Soup is one of those meals that inherently brings people together — maybe it's the warmth, the fusion of ingredients and spices, or the act of ladling into carefully clutched bowls. Soup is also part of the culinary tradition of cultures around the globe. Vermont Edition brought together chefs and listeners to share soup-making tips. Middlebury Chapel sits on a hill overlooking the idyllic campus. Every afternoon, the carillon rings out over the surrounding hillside from the chapel's tower. What does it take to make those bells sing? A long climb up some very steep, very narrow stairs. George Matthew Jr. lives in Brandon and has been carillonneur at Middlebury College for 39 years. He's 89 years old and has two great-grandsons. "I've been around for a while," Matthew said.

October 11, 2024 If you were anywhere near Skenesborough Park in Whitehall, New York, this past Saturday, you might think you were hearing things. But don’t let the moans and screams scare you. In Whitehall, the annual Sasquatch Festival and Calling Contest draws visitors from around the country and the world to celebrate these elusive, mythical creatures. You know, the big, hairy guy that’s said to wander around the woods.

My old improv coach, Woody Drennan, passed away last week. I haven’t done improv comedy for years, but improv was a really big part of my life for a while. Ten years ago, when I was deep in it, I couldn’t have imagined he would be gone a decade later. Woody held comedy in the highest esteem. Improv wasn’t just a silly little game with him, it was an art form, and his passion was infectious.

You: Andrea! What is going on up there in Vermont?!Me: UM, SO MUCH, where do I begin. My summer goal was to swim at least once a week and I pretty much did, minus maybe two rainy weeks. For work, I got to cover a high heel race and a bunch of dogs trying to break a world record, which was really fun. A lot of movie nights, a lot of fresh tomatoes, a lot of drawing. But the thing I’m most proud of is that I finished the scarf I started almost two years ago.

Published August 17, 2024 at 5:00 AM EDT Last Saturday afternoon, Middlebury went to the dogs. More than 200 dogs — and their adoring parents — gathered at the town’s Memorial Sports Center in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most dogs to attend a film screening. The current record is 219 dogs at last year’s Paw Patrol movie in Los Angeles — so they’ll need 220 to break that record.

June is Pride month, and many towns across the Green Mountain state are holding celebrations. The Village of Woodstock recently kicked off their first weekend-long Pride celebration with a high heel race. Racers were encouraged to dress up as they shimmied, sauntered and ran the two-block race course. In fact, for at least one participant, walking — with style — was a must:"I'm wearing vintage 1970s platform shoes, so in these shoes, I will be sauntering," participant Karen Shea said.

As anyone who lives in a small town knows, the lives of the town’s residents often overlap and intersect in many different ways. In a new novel, the interlocking relationships of teenagers, newcomers, and longtime residents play out over a year in the small fictional Vermont town of Glenville. Middlebury resident Carolyn Kuebler, editor of the New England Review, is the author of "Liquid, Fragile, Perishable." Vermont Edition producer Andrea Laurion recently spoke with Kuebler in our studio.
