It’s been an… interesting couple of weeks, to put it mildly. Donald Trump nominated RFK Jr. as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), an agency focused on protecting public health and providing human services. The HHS Secretary is integral in shaping health policy, managing public health crises, and administering Federal health and human services programs.

He repeated this on a Zoom in June of this [2025]. And as the nominee for Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), this is an actual possibility. Mehmet Oz is the OG wellness grifter and probably the most notorious. He’s made millions misleading the public and selling vulnerable people false promises. In fact, The Federal Trade Commission estimates that Mehmet Oz scammed YOU – the public – out of over $50 million by hawking fraudulent products on his TV show, The Dr. Oz Show alone. Even before he got his big break [from] Oprah (still not forgiving that one), Oz was drawn to “alternative medicine” and the wellness industry.

The fear-baiting is truly out of control these days. I can’t open a web browser or social media app without seeing a wildly mischaracterized headline or meme from a wellness influencer that is intended to cause fear about science or health topics. Most recently? Blatantly false headlines and social posts claiming seed oils are causing colon cancer. In fact, the study didn’t look at any sort of dietary contributors in the context of colorectal cancer, seed oil, ultraprocessed foods, or otherwise.
