While the names and faces of some of the hostages, particularly the younger ones, have become familiar in Israel and around the world, others may not be so well known. Retired journalist Oded Lifshitz, who turned 84 in May, is one such hostage. He and his wife, Yocheved, were brutally taken from their home on Kibbutz Nir Oz by Hamas terrorists on October 7. Yocheved was released from captivity after 17 days.

Kalu Baba was born in Pushkar, a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Nowadays, he is creating incredible Indian food in the hipster neighborhood of Florentin, Tel Aviv. The reason? Love, and war. Kalu Baba met his Israeli wife in India, at a restaurant that he owned in his hometown. In 2014, he followed her back to her home in Israel, a picturesque kibbutz called Sde Nehemia in the Upper Galilee.

Since the war began nine and a half months ago, many assume that the communities along the Gaza border have been hardest hit. It is true that those communities suffered the worst civilian massacre in the history of Israel on October 7, when over 1,200 people were slaughtered and thousands more were injured by Hamas terrorists and their supporters. Claro; (with a semicolon), the Mediterranean restaurant in the heart of Tel Aviv is one of the most innovative, sought-after eateries in Israel. One of my fondest memories of growing up in Manchester, England, was the good ol’ chippy tea on a Sunday evening: Fish and chips all round, with mushy peas, curry sauce, and, of course, lashings of vinegar. As a native Brit, I take my fish and chips very, very seriously indeed. Cod is essential (no substitutes), and the batter must be light and non-greasy. The same goes for the chips.
