The clock struck 7 p.m. on my first Wednesday evening at Point Loma Nazarene. Ecstatic, I leaped up, chugged a 300mg Reign energy drink and proceeded down Caf lane toward Golden Gymnasium. The previous pep in my step came to a halt when I entered the weight room. I witnessed the line of students, airpods in, clutching their protein shakes, waiting for one of thefour squat racks to free up. At this moment, it became clear that even this 61-year-old gymnasium has faced modern-day problems.

Point Loma Nazarene University has around 600 military-connected students across all of its programs and campuses. While the university doesn’t have Veterans Day off, the Student Veteran Organization (SVA) strives to honor each other in their own way, according to Alex Lugay, PLNU’s SVA president. The SVA is a nation-wide organization dedicated to building a community of student veterans, according to their website.

Point Loma is the home to over 20 coffee shops. Many of these locations are visited by Point Loma Nazarene University students daily looking for bursts of energy to knock out the day’s homework. Honing in on three of the many cafes, Point Loma’s community is reflected in various ways by each. Margaryta Irving, owner of Vili’s Health Bar, is located on Sunset Cliffs. Irving said what makes her cafe unique is their desire to spread consciousness about healthy foods.
