Once again, Photonics West was thriving, with the exhibit halls and floors of the conference center humming with intense conversations about the latest advances in all areas of photonics technology. I will discuss a few trends I found particularly noteworthy. It was surprising how far-removed Washington and political discussions appeared to be from this meeting of photonics experts from all around the world.

If you look at the photonics landscape, you will see some well-known hotspots: There is of course Jena (my hometown) in Germany; Rochester, N.Y., and Tucson, Ariz., in the U.S.; and Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Vilnius, the capital of the Baltic state Lithuania, might not be the first place that you think of, but it’s definitely up there, too. Lithuania is a small country, roughly twice the size of the state of Maryland, with a population of 2.9 million.

In September, the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) hosted its Technology Meeting on Laser Microprocessing in Vilnius, Lithuania. The atmosphere was intense with effective networking and a steep learning curve for attendees about new trends and local companies. Lithuania is a small country, roughly twice the size of the State of Maryland, and with a population of 2.9 million.

Aachen, Germany — Every even year, the industrial laser community meets in the medieval city of Aachen, Germany, for the International Laser Technology Congress AKL. The three-day event convened 525 participants and 81 speakers from 21 countries this year for the congress’ 14th iteration. The event is organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT (Fraunhofer ILT), which hosts one of Europe’s largest research and application labs.
