Thursday to-do list. 9 o’clock: Solar panel guy. 10 o’clock: Hatboro cemetery to discuss my burial. Kind of funny, right? But that was my morning. Primary and secondary realities both need attending to. The Bible has something to say about the man who has money “yet is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:21). But the Bible also says not to let your rafters sag and your roof leak (Ecclesiastes 10:18). Our default mode is secondary realities. Nothing snaps me out of that more effectively than being sick in bed.

The story goes that young Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), bored during a church service in the cathedral of Pisa, observed the swaying of a lamp suspended from the ceiling and wondered whether its oscillations would be the same for small, medium, and large arcs. Using his own pulse to time the movements, he concluded that a pendulum can be used to measure time, and went on to make scientific breakthroughs in the regularity of natural laws. Francis Schaeffer spoke as a friend when he risked wounding brothers in Christ with these words in his 1971 book True Spirituality: “There is a reality of faith to be acted on consciously after justification. This last point is the point of ignorance of many who stand in the orthodox and historic stream of the Reformation” (italics his). Ouch. Does the shoe fit?

The long-form podcast is the best thing about the internet. I cleaned a whole floor of the church the other day with a lively three-hour discussion between Joe Rogan and Christian geophysicist Stephen Meyer in my hip pocket. You can tell Christianity has some appeal to Rogan, but he fought tooth and nail, like the UFC guy he is. Meyer’s arguments included genetic evidence, historical evidence, archaeological evidence, logic, and personal testimony.

Surely the nursing child is the one who is calm and quiet, not the weaned child. The suckling, not the baby ripped from the bosom, is most to be envied, I insisted. There are different kinds of evidence. Our American judicial system is built around this acknowledgment. When you think about it, criminals don’t leave calling cards. So there have to be indirect ways of ascertaining guilt and innocence, otherwise few wrongdoers would be brought to justice. Varieties of relevant information include the following: forensic, ballistic, DNA, expert testimony, eyewitnesses, circumstantial evidence. All must be weighed with care.
