Let me tell you, running a website, especially the back end, isn’t as easy as it may seem. One mistake could leave you counting losses or even hiring a reputation management agency to save your brand. If you don’t believe me, go read the story of Lowe’s Black Friday crash in 2018. It’s the perfect example of how high-performance websites can crash at a time when you need them up and running the most.

I’ve always been a big fan of fast cars. A 500-horsepower V8 engine with turbo boost? Just hush and take my money! Not enough? How about my house? In an ideal world, that would be me at the car dealership. As a web developer, I’m beginning to realize that fast cars aren’t the only thing I’m obsessed with. Fast servers are my new love language. So what really makes these servers fast? Let’s talk about something called FastCGI.

I don’t think we truly remember just how uninteresting websites were before JavaScript was a thing. They were basically online brochures — just text and images sitting there. You really had to fall in love with the fonts and colors, because that’s all there was. You couldn’t click a button to update content instantly. There were no drop-down menus. No interactive forms or animations. That was out of the question. Then came JavaScript. JavaScript is a programming language that makes websites interactive.

My web development instructor used to say that computers are dumb. And come to think of it, they actually are. A website, for example, offers a functional and user-friendly experience to the average person. But all a computer sees is a collection of files and code. To avoid being essentially useless, computers need an interpreter like Apache. Otherwise, these files would sit on the server — doing nothing. Apache is a web server software that does all the “thinking” so computers can actually function.

When I first started designing websites, I only knew of WordPress. And I mean just the basics — nothing too technical. Studying web development introduced me to a world beyond content management systems. I discovered that there’s more to building websites than installing and styling pre-made themes. Learning about the LAMP stack, in particular, changed how I see websites today. So much happens behind the scenes, all thanks to LAMP.

I’d be willing to bet you hardly think about your computer’s disk space. Unless you have an issue, that is. Nearly all computers have some sort of storage device called disk drives. So when we talk about disk space, we’re referring to the total amount of data a disk drive has room for. Think of it as a filing cabinet containing your computer’s data, but far more powerful. Yes, you can use paper files, but it’s not the 1900s anymore. They have lots of limitations.
