In the UK, the two signature symbols of opulent motoring are without doubt Bentley and Rolls-Royce, a pair of brands renowned across the world for their luxury and very British heritage – despite, ironically, both being under German ownership. The two brands have spent most of their histories closely intertwined. After a glorious beginning based on its 1920s racing exploits, Bentley was bought by Rolls-Royce and, for many years, lived in the shadow of its parent brand.

The past couple of weeks in the automotive world have seen a typical number of new car announcements – most of them were electric vehicles (EVs) of course, but not all, the menu also including plug-in hybrids and even a performance petrol-powered car in the latest BMW M2.

The Ora 3 from Chinese manufacturer GWM might not be one of the best known electric small cars around, though it did earn some headlines when first launched onto the UK market in 2022, basically because it had a different name. The car’s creators, however, very quickly got the idea that UK audiences were unlikely to want to drive a car called the ‘Funky Cat’ (we kid you not) and with a speed that Western manufacturers should take good note of, the model was rebranded as the Ora 03.

The Ducato is the largest vehicle in the Fiat light-commercial range and like many of its siblings is effectively the Fiat variant of basically identical vehicles – any Ducato user jumping into a Citroën Relay, Peugeot Boxer or Vauxhall Movano would be in familiar surroundings. The Ducato underwent a major facelift in 2024 and is today offered in two versions, the electrically-powered E-Ducato and the model Business Vans is testing here, with the traditional 2.2-litre diesel engine.

The Volkswagen ID.3 was for its manufacturer a pioneer, the first VW designed from the start as an electric vehicle and kicking off the ID range that has become the core of the German brand’s electric ambitions. Enjoyed watching #F1 this season, which a few years ago I couldn't imagine saying. Big part of it, the @SkySportsF1 coverage - so deeply embedded, across every aspect. For me who’s been on the inside of a significant series, it's like being part of it while watching it on TV...
