Volvo says it won’t look to compete with the Chinese newcomer brands — including those that are part of its same global company — suggesting Australian customers will still want “the tried and trusted”. Speaking at the launch of the all-electric EX90, Volvo Cars Australia MD Stephen Connor told EV Central that he views Geely, Zeekr, Polestar and the still incoming Lynk & Co the same as any other competitor brand, despite all being sub-brands of the giant Geely Auto Group.

JAC suggests not all towing ratings are created equal, promising its T9 Hunter plug-in hybrid dual-cab will tow 3.5-tonnes, no matter the heat or the hill, while softly implying its competitors couldn’t keep up. The pool of plug-in hybrid utes is set to grow more crowded still in Australia, with Chinese brand JAC whipping the covers off its T9 Hunter plug-in hybrid at the Melbourne Motor Show tonight. The show was in fact the global debut of the Hunter – an indication of just how seriously the brand is taking the Australian market – with the dual-cab PHEV locked in for a Q1 2026 launch here.

The EX90 might look a bit like some of Volvo’s petrol-powered product, but beneath the skin it’s an EV-from-birth, capitalising on a dedicated electric vehicle platform to maximise cabin space, serving up plenty of space for people, and a whole heap of cargo room. This premium, three-row large SUV also wears a pretty premium price tag, but also goes some way towards justifying it by arriving with dual-motor powertrain, fast charging and a big battery, right from the cheapest model.

Geely has taken a razor to even its own pricing predictions for its EX5 electric SUV, with the mid-size model to start at $40,990 before on-road costs In Australia. The move ends the brand’s pricing saga in Australia, with Geely initially promising the model would arrive at between $49,000 and $55,000, before a pricing leak hit the web with a that said it would start at $43,490 before on-road costs. But the official pricing beats both prior predictions, with the EX5 Complete to list at $40,990.
