In the blink of an eye, six months has elapsed since I took over as executive editor of the Times-News. Most days, especially early on, have a “drinking from the firehose” kind of feel to them as I try to remember the inner workings of the Times-News and get a feel for the community. But even as I swim upstream on most days, I have not been disappointed. The pace and intensity of the work has been invigorating.

In the big scheme of things, the photo we printed on the front page of the sports section on Nov. 16 probably didn’t raise any eyebrows or trigger questions about journalism ethics. Yet the situation surrounding the photo is noteworthy for me, as executive editor, and a good place to stop and make a point I believe is relevant. The photo in question was an excellent shot taken by former Times-News photographer Pat Sutphin.
