Four academies in Birmingham are run by Core Education Trust, which created a project to educate children about the Holocaust, where millions of mostly Jewish people were murdered during World War Two.

The regulator of a landfill site where noxious gases give off a foul stench has said it has received more than 760 complaints in one day. Walleys Quarry in Silverdale, Staffordshire, was served a closure notice in November after the Environment Agency (EA) said there was a risk of "significant long-term pollution". Some residents have linked pollution there to instances of ill health in the area, leading to years of protests, legal rows and EA scrutiny.

A tribute has been released to Donell Goodall, a cyclist who died following a suspected hit-and-run collision. The 25-year-old was struck by a car on Brandwood Park Road in Birmingham on the evening of 3 January. He died in hospital a few days later. "Donell was a family man and for him everything was about his son who is just three years-old," his family said. West Midlands Police has said it believed the crash involved a silver BMW and the driver failed to stop at the scene.

A solar farm to power about 3,000 homes could be built on a rural site in Shropshire if plans are approved. The proposals, from G Power Solar Ltd, are for a 24.5 hectare (60.5 acre) site at The Beeches, off Alkington Road, near to the A41, close to Whitchurch. Sheep grazing would continue at the site around the panels, which have a lifespan of about 40 years, Rachael Leather, from Atticus Planning, said.

A move to create a new business group in a town aimed at increasing footfall has met with resistance from some firms over the extra cost. Those behind the idea of a Bridgnorth Business Improvement District (BID) said it would also make the town safer.
