Floyd was quickly embraced as this new religion’s first martyr. Publicity for last Friday’s “Day of Remembrance” at the Minneapolis City Hall featured an image of Floyd crowned with a halo and strewn with flowers.

If there is a better television drama series than Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective (1986), I haven’t seen it. Recently I decided to watch again this fascinating and curious story, one in which the penumbral borderlands between past and present and fact and fiction are continually transgressed. It seems unlikely that such an experimental work of art would find its way on to television these days, let alone at a primetime slot on BBC One.

Four cavalrymen collide on a battlefield. They are grappling for the standard, their swords raised, their faces twisted into monstrous snarls. Bodies of men and horses converge unnaturally in a maelstrom of urgency and rage. As they struggle for their prize, we can almost hear the clash of armor, the snapping of equine teeth, the pounding of hooves and hearts in the scalding fog of war.
