    Beginning in 2022, PRRI’s American Values Survey noted an increase in public support for policies requiring transgender people to use bathrooms based on their birth sex. It was the only issue that bucked the trend in growing public support for LGBTQ rights. However, in 2022 and 2023, there has been a surge of anti-transgender and anti-gay legislation, and there has been a marked increase in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and demonstrations.

    This report provides estimates of the number and percent of the U.S. adult population that identifies as LGBT, overall, as well as by age. Estimates of LGBT adults at the national, state, and regional levels are included. We rely on BRFSS 2020-2021 data for these estimates. Pooling multiple years of data provides more stable estimates—particularly at the state level. Combining 2020-2021 BRFSS data, we estimate that 5.5% of U.S. adults identify as LGBT.

    Concerning Gender, Sexuality, and PoliticsPRRI’s 2023 Gender and Politics Survey provides an important update on the current state of the opinions of American adults on pressing questions about gender and sexuality.     (RNS) — In one of the last decisions announced this season, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a conservative Christian business owner had the right to refuse service to same-sex couples if the service could be construed as a creative expression or implied endorsement of their relationship. The ruling, the latest in a series of such cases, affirmed a common narrative: that religious people and LGBTQ+ people are mutually exclusive groups and in tension with one another.

    The 2023 legislative cycle has already seen a massive increase in the number of anti-LGBTQ bills proposed in state legislatures, with a total of 378 pieces of legislation filed as of the end of February. In previous legislative sessions, these sorts of bills have largely been about transgender youth and education, but this round of legislation goes much further.
