Cortical thickness provides one indication of how well the brain functions. We used MRI to examine cortical thickness in young autistic children with and without intellectual disability. We found that autistic children with and without intellectual disability have different relationships between cortical thickness and IQ. We also found substantial overlap between brain maps of cortical thickness associated with intellectual ability and autism symptom severity.
