Clusters of severe thunderstorms are expected to strike Australia’s southern regions over Thursday and Friday. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings and forecasts related to these unusually widespread stormy conditions as they move through South Australia today and into Victoria. Some areas have already experienced golf ball-sized hail and intense winds. While we might not always think of thunderstorms as a threat, severe storms can be surprisingly damaging.

After three La Niña summers many of us would have been expecting much hotter and drier conditions this spring and summer after the arrival of El Niño. Instead, in many parts of eastern Australia it’s rained and rained over the last few weeks. El Niño hasn’t gone away. It’s expected to continue into 2024. Why the rain? Because even with an El Niño, eastern Australia can still experience significant rain events. Despite the recent rain, Australia’s summer is much more likely than normal to be a hot one.
