As 2024 ends, it’s impossible to ignore the sense of heaviness in the air. Even with the election in the rearview mirror, the year has continued to seethe with political divisiveness, deep frustration over social injustices, and senseless violence. Earlier last month UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was brazenly murdered on the streets of Manhattan by 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, a young man with chronic back pain consumed by rage over systemic inequities in healthcare.

The election is over. The results are in. Half of our country is ecstatic, and the other half is sorely disappointed, if not devastated. But we must learn to live together and talk to one another again. We’re going to have to do something we haven’t done well as a society for a long time: look into one another’s eyes and see not an ideological friend or foe, but a fellow human being walking this path alongside us.

I have a confession. Back in 2015, I found myself flirting with an unhealthy fascination with then-candidate Donald Trump. To be clear, I did not and could not vote for him. But like many who were exhausted by the inertia and corruption of politics as usual, I was tempted to gamble with something new, something dangerous. I was also searching for meaning in my own life. Trump was an outsider; I felt like an outsider.
