A Virgin flight from Queenstown to Melbourne has been diverted after flames were seen shooting from an engine. The flight left at 4pm AEST and is now circling Invercargill, a southern NZ city. Members of the public reported seeing the flames and hearing loud bangs, according to NZ media reports. Virgin Airlines VA148 is believed to have 73 people on board. More to come.

READING LEVEL: REDAustralia has offered rescue aid after a western province of our near neighbour Papua New Guinea was hit by a major landslide. Rescuers have been racing to save trapped villagers after the landslide directly above the remote hillside village of Maip Mulitaka in Enga province in the early hours of Friday morning. The landslide occurred after a chunk of nearby Mount Mungalo collapsed, bringing down rocks and dirt over the village.
