On his nightly program recently, long-running HBO news pundit Bill Maher, in reference to one of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’s dire misassessments of Hamas’s nefarious intent, demanded that she just “shut up” already. Coming from a lifelong liberal, Maher’s acerbic reprimand should cause pondering Jews to sit up and take note.

Show me a city where there have been pro-Hamas (“Death to America”) demonstrations, university encampments and organized violence against Jews and, without exception, these will be cities that have stopped prosecuting shoplifters and chosen to raise the goal posts for prosecuting crimes of all classes.

The American Jewish Committee (AJC)’s recently released survey, conducted in March and April of 2024, provides a disheartening insight into the lack of awareness on the part of Jewish Americans as to the dire straits in which we presently find ourselves.   Amongst the 1,001 Jewish online participants, it was found that “a significant majority of American Jews harbor deep concerns about antisemitism in the United States (87%) and remain strongly supportive of Israel (85%)”.

President Joe Biden’s address yesterday on Israel’s war was almost everything you could have hoped for. It was tough. By naming Hamas as the enemy of civilization and condemning their acts of evil, it was unambiguous. It pledged unconditional support for Israel. In retrospect, it seemed like the most pro-Israel speech that an American president has ever delivered.
