There is no doubt the world today is a scary and often deeply unpleasant place. In the Middle East, the conflict between Israel – and now the United States – and Iran continues and escalates, sparking fears of a wider war. Meanwhile, Israel’s brutal operation in Gaza continues unabated, causing immense suffering among the civilians there, while also failing to release those Israeli hostages – both dead and alive – still cruelly held by Hamas terrorists.

Spain is a richly diverse country, scorchingly hot for much of the year, always vibrant in colour. Andalucia’s sun-drenched landscape, the big skies, the passionate people, the flamboyant festivals were what it took to liberate the artist in Alan Pearson, when he retired there in 2007. “For some expats it’s just a world of sun, sangria, and siestas but from the start all I really wanted to do was capture it on canvas,” he says.

She came back to Keighley, relieved to be home. “I realised how much I’d missed the people, the local culture, the crazy juxtaposition of natural and urban landscapes,” she says forthrightly. “I decided this was where I wanted to be.” Clearly, many of her paintings since becoming a full-time professional - accepting commissions - reflect her interest in finding a poignant beauty in the diversity of the surrounding world.

Local elections are often dismissed as insignificant, but there is no doubt they can provide a useful indication of what is happening in national politics. Thursday’s contest in England, with about a third of councils up for election, provides a useful example. It is, after all, the first major electoral test of Sir Keir Starmer’s government after the Labour Party’s triumph at the General Election last July.
