“It’s you, only faster.” But it is not, not really. The truth behind the massive adoption of electric motor-equipped mountain machines is much murkier. Start at the easily defined extremes. My rigid single-speed bicycle is 100% me-powered. A GasGas TXE trials moto is 100% e-powered. And yes, those two rigs have nothing in common besides two wheels and hydraulic brakes (that is why I chose them).

Cy’s Bad IdeaMy grom wants to know why I am laughing. I tell her, “Cy wants me to move to Kipling, Saskatchewan. One thousand people live there, it is pancake flat, and it is home to the World's Largest Paper Clip. Said paper clip is 15 feet tall and weighs 3,000 pounds.” She throws me her patented pre-teen look of indifferent incredulity, a silently but fully communicated ‘Okay, sure, whatever papa,’ and then wanders off before I can elaborate further. Huh.

I just sat down to start typing and there are already key issues with this piece. More than anything, I am imagining a cheeky text message from Cy asking how many more times I am going to try some variation of flogging the same dead glue stick in 2024. I just cannot help it, every time I hear someone talking about how Shimano XT is now a “budget groupset” my left eye starts to tick. Further, I am not generally a fan of automotive analogies.

I have tried to be trendy and cut down on the epic back sweat, but a hip pack – bum/butt bag, fanny pack, belt-bag, portgizmo, whatever you like to call it – simply does not work with my stunning synthesis of dadbod and hiplessness. Either the damn thing is slowly slipping down the whole time I am riding, or I get a tersely communicated complaint from my gastrointestinal system. Lighter hip pack loads are better. Some designs work better than others.

I have not ridden oodles of bikes in the 170-180mm travel category and along with the fact that I do not gravitate towards bikes with this much travel as personal daily-driver options that is certainly a valid criticism of any review I am writing about a rig in the super-enduro (light-freeride?) category.

From suspension to brakes and, of course, fashion, there is no question of the influence that moto, MX, dirt biking, etc. has had on mountain biking back to the earliest days of using motorcycle levers to actuate rim brakes.
