Apr. 7—I live in Maggie Valley, and if there's one thing you can say about that corner of Haywood County, it's this — there's no shortage of breakfast places nearby. I favor Pop's when I feel like walking, and the Buttered Biscuit when I want to waddle out to the parking lot for a six hour post-breakfast car nap. Yes, I'm aware the Buttered Biscuit isn't technically in Maggie. But it's spiritually in Maggie. I'll die on this hill, please don't email me.

Bearded anglers in waders, families in jeans, sleepy-looking teenagers who could have been in bed but weren’t. Forty people meant a lot of vehicles jammed into the shop’s overflow parking areas — mostly trucks, but a few sedans and smaller cars wedged in haphazardly as well. A few of the trucks had out-of-state tags.

A hefty budget reduction at the Department of Agriculture as a result of Trump administration policy could soon have a very real impact on Haywood County farmers. Last week, the USDA announced it would cut $1 billion from its budget allocated to programs that allow schools and food banks to purchase directly from local farmers.
