We report from the Black Sea port city of Odesa, where life goes on, despite the threat of Russian attacks. In a sane world, it would be difficult to move on Odesa's cobbled streets for young men on stag nights, city-breakers trying to avoid them and influencers photographing themselves in front of beautiful buildings resembling wedding cakes ( writes Andrew Mueller). In our world, however, no budget airlines are touching down at Odesa International - or have done so for more than three years.

Qatar's reported offer of a Boeing 747 to US president Donald Trump is not the first such gratuity in the history of US-Middle East relations. The same gift was presented in the opposite direction in February 1945, when US president Franklin D Roosevelt gave Saudi Arabia's founding king, Ibn Saud, a Dakota DC-3. The Dakota was a less exclusive aircraft than the Qatari 747 coveted by Trump.

At the Munich Security Conference in February, the US vice-president, JD Vance, informed his hosts that they were a wretched bunch of effete, cheese-eating milquetoasts with whom his country could no longer be bothered (I paraphrase but not that much). There has since been lots of hand-wringing about how the continent should respond to the threat of US abandonment.

They all lost by colossal margins to an 80-year-old who is not only awaiting trial on charges of crimes against humanity but is doing so in a foreign prison. Not for the first time, Rodrigo Duterte has defied all conventional wisdom about politics - as well as common sense.
