A sentinel loop is a short segment of adynamic ileus close to an intra-abdominal inflammatory process. It is usually identified on abdominal radiography 4 and CT 3. The sentinel loop sign may aid in localizing the source of inflammation. For example, a sentinel loop in the upper abdomen may indicate pancreatitis or cholecystitis, whilst one in the right lower quadrant may be due to appendicitis 2 or renal infarction 5.

The ankle horizontal beam lateral view is a modified lateral view part of a three view ankle series. This projection is used to assess the distal tibia and fibula, talus, navicular, cuboid, the base of the 5th metatarsal and calcaneus. It is a highly adaptable projection that can be used in trauma or with patients who are unable to ambulate to the desired standard lateral position.

Dual-energy CT has a variety of clinical applications in vascular imaging, due to the utilization of material decomposition and the ability to reconstruct images at a variety of energy levels. Clinical applicationsHigh kVp CT scans have lower contrast than that of lower kVp due to the K-edge of iodine, giving the lower energy of the dual energy scan an advantage over conventional CT. The attenuation values of large vessels enhanced with iodine are 70% higher at 80 kVp than at 140 kVp 1.

CT perfusion of the brain is a dynamic, contrast-enhanced study utilized in patients with suspected stroke to differentiate salvageable ischemic brain tissue (i.e. penumbra) from damaged infarcted brain 1. NB: This article is intended to outline some general principles of protocol design. The specifics will vary depending on CT hardware and software, radiologists' and referrers' preference, institutional protocols, patient factors (e.g. allergy) and time constraints.

The clavicle AP view is a standard projection part of the clavicle series. The projection demonstrates the shoulder in its natural anatomical position allowing for adequate radiographic examination of the entire clavicle. The AP clavicle is often indicated in patients with suspected clavicular injuries following trauma such as falling onto ones side. It can be requested as part of a concentrated radiograph to assess for metastasis or multiple myeloma.
