It goes without saying that the Switch 2 showcase and its announcements will be the biggest news of the year, but it was soured somewhat by an egotistical and elitist decision by Nintendo. They decided to make the greedy decision to charge money for what is nothing more than an interactive manual. Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is a neat idea for a game to showcase the unique features of the Switch 2.

2024 was a stellar year for games, with a ton of standout releases. You had indie games made by small teams dominate the industry, as well as AAA games polished to a high sheen. So many genres had incredible releases, so just about everyone had something new and awesome to mess around with. Here are the nominees for TechRaptor's 2024 Game of the Year Award for the best game of the year, whose sum of its parts is greater than any other.

AAA games feel like what we gravitate to when we want our mind blown or absolutely saturated in something, whether that's an insanely detailed world or crazy action. Indie games have a much wider variety, and because by necessity they have to have a great hook or idea to form a game around, those that usually see the most success are also the most interesting games of the year.

Pixels sure looked good in 2024, didn't they? We've been a few years removed from all of AAA just having to focus on realism in graphics, and the results of that have been awesome. With just how formulaic and rigid Mario Party is, I wouldn’t blame you for feeling a bit along the lines of “played one, played them all.” I think Super Mario Party Jamboree is going to change some minds, however. While at PAX West, I got a little over an hour with the game and got to play a few of the games modes, including checking out the classic Party mode of collecting stars around the boardgame.

I had no idea what to expect when I went to check out OMUT at PAX West. When I walked away, its weird, dark world had charmed me, and I was more than happy to keep on dying until I ran out of time with my best run being one hit away from victory.. OMUT is mechanically simple, lean and mean with the one goal of killing you as much as possible. It’s difficult, punishing, frustrating, tantalizing, alluring, cathartic, and glory-inducing all in one.
