A digital rectal exam (DRE) is a VITAL component of the male physical exam in which a gloved, lubricated finger is placed gently within the rectum to examine the outer, accessible surface of the prostate and gain valuable information about its health. An annual DRE is highly recommended after age 40. Although not a pleasant examination, it is brief and not painful.
