Erie Insurance reports it has made progress in reconnecting several business systems and applications as it continues to recover from a network outage that is now 17 days old. The insurer said the network and system outage it initiated on June 7 helped contain a threat.

While cyclists on Pennsylvania road must make “reasonable efforts” to not impede the flow of traffic, the law does not mandate that they let faster traffic pass by always and immediately pulling off the read, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently held in a case of a bicyclist protesting a $25 traffic ticket given him by a state trooper.

Erie Insurance said it has “seen no evidence of ransomware and there is no indication of ongoing threat actor activity” in a June 17 update on its 10-day long network outage. That statement would appear to contradict claims in two class action lawsuits filed against the insurer. Both lawsuits claimed a ransomware group accessed the insurer’s network and there was a a data breach. Erie has also not acknowledged any data breach. “At this time, we have control of our systems,” the insurer reported.

Not one but two class action lawsuits have been filed against Erie Insurance even as the insurer continues to investigate its cyber security incident. One lawsuit was filed by an Illinois customer, Neil Plascencia; the other by Amy Haas, a former Erie employee who lives in Wisconsin. Both claim Erie Insurance was negligent in not protecting their personally identifiable information (PII) and each seeks $5 million in damages.

Connecticut lawmakers have passed a measure to shift the cost of auto insurance arbitration hearings between claimants and insurers over damage claims to the insurance industry. Currently the department of insurance absorbs the average $3,075 cost to hold each of these arbitration hearings. Insurance Commissioner Andrew Mais thinks shifting some of that expense onto insurers might reduce the need for arbitration.
NYC Council Passes Bill to Lower Insurance Limits for For-Hire Vehicles

With urging from a coalition of for-hire vehicle drivers and companies including Uber, the New York City Council voted to lower a for-hire vehicles’ insurance requirement in hopes of lowering premiums and disincentivizing fraud. The lawmakers voted 50-0 (with one abstention) to change the amount of personal injury insurance coverage that the city’s 74,000 Uber, Lyft, yellow taxi, and livery drivers have to buy.

A new class action lawsuit alleges that digital insurer Lemonade has violated the privacy of as many as 190,000 drivers by disclosing their license numbers to cybercriminals through its online auto insurance quote platform. The complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan accuses Lemonade of negligence in handling of individuals’ data and of violating the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, New York business law, and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) data security guidelines.

A federal district court judge in Boston has granted preliminary approval to a $2.16 million settlement between the New England Patriots organization and a class of fans who claim their personally identifiable information (PII) was shared without their permission while using the team’s app. The original complaint was filed by Anthony Serra in February 2024 on behalf of users of the Patriots mobile app.
