Erie Insurance reports it has made progress in reconnecting several business systems and applications as it continues to recover from a network outage that is now 17 days old. The insurer said the network and system outage it initiated on June 7 helped contain a threat.

While cyclists on Pennsylvania road must make “reasonable efforts” to not impede the flow of traffic, the law does not mandate that they let faster traffic pass by always and immediately pulling off the read, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently held in a case of a bicyclist protesting a $25 traffic ticket given him by a state trooper.

Erie Insurance said it has “seen no evidence of ransomware and there is no indication of ongoing threat actor activity” in a June 17 update on its 10-day long network outage. That statement would appear to contradict claims in two class action lawsuits filed against the insurer. Both lawsuits claimed a ransomware group accessed the insurer’s network and there was a a data breach. Erie has also not acknowledged any data breach. “At this time, we have control of our systems,” the insurer reported.

Not one but two class action lawsuits have been filed against Erie Insurance even as the insurer continues to investigate its cyber security incident. One lawsuit was filed by an Illinois customer, Neil Plascencia; the other by Amy Haas, a former Erie employee who lives in Wisconsin. Both claim Erie Insurance was negligent in not protecting their personally identifiable information (PII) and each seeks $5 million in damages.
