Dermott Brereton admits it’s been tricky coming to terms with his partner’s son landing at Essendon. The Hawthorn legend has a storied rivalry with the Bombers and as a result his tolerance for the red and black could be described as quite low. In the mid-season rookie draft last week, Archer May was selected by the Dons out of WAFL club Subiaco with Pick 6. May, 20, is the son of Dermie’s long-term partner Julie who is back living with them after his stint in Perth.

Adam Simpson has recalled the time when his arrogance as a young coach came back to bite him. The two-time premiership player and former captain had finished as a player at North Melbourne at the end of the 2009 season. He threw himself straight into coaching, landing a gig as an assistant at Hawthorn for the 2010 season and remaining until the end of 2013 when he took over as West Coast’s senior coach.

Hawthorn players came together for a brutal and scathing meeting in the wake of the club’s disappointing loss to Collingwood. Maxwell’s first real taste of tournament cricket came in 2015 when he helped Australia claim victory over New Zealand in the Final in Melbourne. He says as a proud Melburnian, alongside Aaron Finch, it was the most special of memories.

This one was particularly fun to write - Trent Cotchin's 300th feature for the @AFLrecord. I didn't get to speak to the great man, but @Richmond_FC legends @mattricho0 & Alex Rance helped me out. 3 flags as skipper, 300 games, star. 🐯 #AFL | #Cotch300 | @tcotchin9 https://t.co/nNfr5mBd0V
