MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive’s Tillman School of Business Department of Accounting and CIS will officially launch the 2024 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program on Feb. 12, led by Dr. Tanya Smith, CPA, and Assistant Dean of the Tillman School of Business Waylon Woodall, CPA. The VITA program offers University of Mount Olive students valuable hands-on experience in preparing individual tax returns for residents of Mount Olive and nearby communities.

Wayne County Public Schools will dismiss two hours early on Friday due to winter weather being in the forecast for Wayne County. Ken Dersken, Executive Director for Community Engagement and Student and Family Support for Wayne County Public Schools, sent out the following statement from WCPS on Thursday afternoon: “Due to the threat of icy weather forecast to arrive as early as tomorrow evening, all schools will dismiss two hours early, tomorrow, Friday, January 10.

The statewide “Holiday Booze It & Lose It” enforcement campaign increases public awareness and deters impaired people from driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and other impairing substances.

At their Dec. 2 meeting, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners voted to name the new Wayne County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) building in honor of E.B. Borden Parker. Borden Parker has served as the Wayne County attorney since 1975. Before Parker’s service, his father, Fred Parker Jr., served as county attorney from 1936-1975.
