Glaucoma UK has announced the appointments of the new President and President-elect for the UK and Éire Glaucoma Society (UKEGS). Taking over from Ms Nishani Amerasinghe, the 2025 President is Dr Andrew Tatham who is a consultant at Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion Edinburgh. He is the NHS Research Scotland Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology and Honorary Reader at University of Edinburgh. In his spare time Andrew is a qualified classifier for the British Paralympic Association.

DiscussionWe have reported the results of a European-wide effort to establish the top 10 priorities for research in glaucoma. Our process has aimed at reflecting the priorities of patients and clinicians. Although we observed some overlap in topics, an important finding of our process is that patients and doctors have different priorities. For example, finding a cure was a top research priority by patients but not identified as such by doctors, possibly due to feasibility considerations.

Myocilin gene (MYOC) mutations contribute to 4% of primary open angle glaucoma and >10% of juvenile open angle glaucoma (JOAG) [1]. Aberrant myocilin proteins accumulate in trabecular meshwork (TM) cell endoplasmic reticulum leading to cell death [2, 3]. As the proximal outflow pathway is implicated in myocilin-associated glaucoma, it is cogent to choose treatments targeting the TM.
