Ohio’s largest police union says it’s launching a plan to recruit political candidates to challenge local and state officials who it says don’t adequately stand up for police. The Protect Ohio Police campaign is a response to several recent incidents in which Ohio police have been shot or killed, Ohio Fraternal Order of Police President Jay McDonald told reporters in Columbus Thursday.

Allison Russo, the top Democrat in the Ohio House, is stepping down from her leadership role as she faces a decision about whether to run for higher office in 2026. Russo informed other Ohio House Democrats on Thursday morning that she will resign her position as House minority leader at the end of this month, according to her political team. She will remain in her elected office, although she can’t run for reelection when her term expires at the end of next year because of term limits.

Former state representative Kathleen Clyde is in line to become the next leader of the Ohio Democratic Party, after her main opponent in the intra-party contest ended his candidacy on Thursday. State Sen. Bill DeMora told some party members about his decision on Thursday, according to four sources, including people who have spoken with him. DeMora and Clyde haven’t yet responded to messages and neither have posted anything about it on social media.

But it’s the Senate’s version of the budget that sets the final terms of the debate. The bill funds state operations for the next two years and calls for spending $60 billion of tax dollars.
