1984 was the greatest year of my golfing life — and the year I let go of the dream. It was the year I won the Wem Bowl, a prestigious 36-hole scratch amateur championship at Hawkstone Park in my native county of Shropshire, England. A course steeped in history and prestige — home to Sandy Lyle, whose name graced the same trophy alongside Ryder Cup legends like Ian Woosnam and Peter Baker. I shot 72–70.
