When I was five, the British government decided to turn a few unlucky classrooms — including mine — into guinea pigs for an experimental reading scheme. The goal? Teach kids to read faster using a bizarre phonics-based program. The result? A generation of confused children and, in my case, a lifelong inability to spell. The program was called “ITA” (Initial Teaching Alphabet) — there was only one there, only one bare, and waz had a ” Z.” You get the idea. It was supposed to be clever.

One of the greatest advantages of picking up golf as a kid wasn’t just learning the game — it was learning the game behind the game. From the age of 12 or 13, I found myself walking fairways with doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, real estate moguls, sales pros, and small business owners who ran everything from car dealerships to corner stores. Even back then, my curiosity was insatiable. While most kids were focused on their swings, I was also focused on the story behind the guy hitting the ball.
