Deutsche Telekom is throwing its connectivity and IT infrastructure hats into the ring for the IRIS2, the EU’s project for a multi-orbital constellation of communication satellites. DT’s contribution to the scheme will involve the design of advanced IT and data centre services, secure networks (WAN) and a 5G core network. It joins a consortium of firms collectively known as SpaceRISE, which includes SES, Eutelsat and Hispasat.

The UK Government has announced 50 existing mobile masts across England, Scotland and Wales have been upgraded to improve rural mobile coverage. The masts, which were initially only used to connect EE customers and those calling 999, have now been upgraded to provide coverage from all mobile network operators.

It’s the first operational use of a particular type of technology from Ericsson called Logarithmic Periodic antennas, which are designed to put out 5G coverage in tunnels subject to high levels of vibration and air pressure changes. Five of Ericsson’s tunnel-optimized antennas were installed through the Arlinger Tunnel, which stretches 1,400 meters on the edge of Black Forest and which serves both car and rail commuters in Baden-Württemberg.
