1 IntroductionThe thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck on which nodules – small fluid or solid lumps – can develop. These nodules are detectable with palpation in about 2–6% of the population and with ultrasound in around 19–67% (1). Most are benign, but approximately 5% are cancerous (2).
