A trident symbol has evident in cultures from Europe to India since time immemorial, carried by Poseidon, Neptune, Shiva, Vishnu, and other deities. Plato said a golden trident and azure garments were worn by the kings of Atlantis in his Timaeus written between 360 and 355 BC.
